I guess I’m lucky, as I sit here in Afghanistan I’ve been using my personal equipment for the last couple of months here and doing some great things. Well the Army has bought us 2 complete edit suites from 1 Beyond configured with Xpress Pro and of course PC based. I’m getting the workflow down but is there always this steep of a learning curve? I can cut just fine and capturing is not a big problem but effects and titleing seem like a laborious task every time I go there. We really are lucky as I have my FCP and two complete avids to work on. I’ve been through most of the tutorials and getting around in program is no big deal. When does soething kick in and this avid stuff become, Well intuitive? Just beacuse I understand it and it works there should become a point where it’s automatic or have I just used FCP so long that my brain is stuck and unable and get back to basics and grasp the nuances of having to think about the different modes. I’m cutting 4-5 1-2 minute spots a week with several longer pieces compiled from the reports. Right now i’m slower with avid but i’m making it work just waiting for it all to click and become a normal part of the workflow. I’m here for 8 more months so it gives me something to work on. Anything besides the tutorials and traiining DVDs that were included to get someone up to speed faster?

The big thing is to not try to make the Avid do things the FCP way. It’s hard – and will be your biggest obstacle. FCP and Avid are different, and trying to make Avid work like FCP will make you crazy. The basic title tool is limited, but Marquee is really cool once you get it. Unfortunatly, the manual sucks… If you can IMPAC a purchase of a DVD called ‘Marquee Demystified’ (https://www.amazon.com/Avid-Marquee-Demystified-Steve-Bayes/dp/B000DIMENA/sr=8-1/qid=1162445475/ref=sr_1_1/102-0342916-2328124?ie=UTF8&s=dvd) do it. It’s a great resource.

    Good luck and stay safe…

I’ve been writing and compiling some links to articles on Avid and Final Cut Pro comparisons that may be a bit of help:

I agree they are very different programs but I personally see the similarities more than the difference. I’ve done some small things like mapping my FCP keyboard to match the Avid as closely as I can. It really help in that I jump back and forth on an almost daily basis.

Thanks to all I have had more luck the last couple of days. I have an documentary shooter/editor that’s Avid centric and teaches at NY University. Should get me off the ground a little faster. Thanks to all
