I currently am editing on a G4 dual 1.25 ghz system with 1Gb of RAM and an NVidia GForce 4 Titanium graphics card. FCP 4.5 HD. All of the projects I edit are DV. Of course I am considering an upgrade to a new system, but have this one question. When I place a 15 or 30 frame dissolve between footage it requires rendering. Is there a way to have real time transitions? Will the new system help? The reason for a new system would to be more efficient and to handle newer formats. Will an 8-core MacPro with 4-8Gb RAM, ATI HD 2600 GTX graphics card and FCS2 still have to render transitions? If the old on ain’t broke (don’t fix it) and you can still make money, sometimes you have to put up with it for a little while longer. Thanks.

Couple of things, does your sequence codec match your footage codec?
Do you have other effects on your footage like color corrections?
Did you use an “easy setup” that matches your footage?

I wouldn’t think you would have to render transitions, even on your current system.
Check your settings, including unlimited RT vs safe RT.

The new system you described will be a GREAT upgrade for you, but I think if that is your only concern, I think with a little research you can solve your problem and hang on a bit longer.

There are still some issues being worked out with the latest Quicktime and Leopard.
May be best to wait it out.
