transition problem

On the primary storyline? Sounds like either you’re not selecting the end of the clips properly so it’s highlighting the entire clip and adding a transition to both ends or it’s time to reinstall Final Cut Pro. If you’re talking about connected clips them the black box is a secondary storyline.

A screen shot would probably help us see what’s happening.

Thank you for the help. Here is a screen shot of what happens when I try to put in a transition.

A black box forms around three clips and two transitions are added. I don’t want the black box or the two transitions only the one.

That’s a secondary storyline- required to create transitions between clips connected to the primary storyline.

It appears that you are trying to create a transition between connected clips which is why you are seeing this behavior.

I have to ask… From your screen shot we can see that your Primary Storyline is empty. Why is that?

What happened is that your clips were not on the primary storyline. They are just Connected Clips above an empty primary storyline. In order to add a transition between clips, they have to be on a storyline so what FCP X did was create a secondary storyline for you. In addition, you probably selected the clip in the middle and dropped a transition on it which by default, adds the transition to both the head and tail of the clip which required creating a secondary storyline from three clips: the selected clip, the clip before it, and the clip after it.

If you want the transitions to behave as you expect, you should have your clips on the primary storyline and then Command+Click (⌘+click) just the edge that you want the transition applied to before you add it.

You don’t need to Command click on the edge. Just click on it.

Also you can position the playhead or skimmer between two clips and use the bracket keys:

[ = select left edge
] = select right edge

An upcoming video from FCPExchange will have Steve Martin doing an entire edit without touching the mouse. Looking forward to that one.
