    I’m probably just to stupid but how can I get the old transition behaviour to shorten the media??

    Not 100% sure what you’re asking but an FCPX transition is either centred around your edit point or, if there’s not enough frames in one or both clips to do that, will warn you and move the edit point to create enough frames for the transition to be added.
