    I have some footage I’m working with that’s 720×486.

I’ve split the event in two places and am creating transitions (a flash) between those transitions.

I’ve noticed, though, that at the flash points, the “flash” is covering the entire aspect of my project. My project settings are normally 1920×1080.

Can I set something for this particular event on the timeline so that when I add a flash transition, the “flash” only covers the 720×486 size of the event, not the entire screen?

    (Did that make sense?)

    Thanks.

[Ron Whitaker] “Can I set something for this particular event on the timeline so that when I add a flash transition, the “flash” only covers the 720×486 size of the event, not the entire screen?”

Place the two events with the flash transition in a separate 720×486 project and drop that project into the main project as a “nested project”. This is just like using a nested Comp in After Effects (if you are familiar with AE) and is the general way that you deal with media that is not the aspect of the project.

    That’s a great idea that I hadn’t considered.

Actually that wouldn’t work with these particular clips for some reason. I ended up changing the entire project I was working on to 720×486 and the flash transitions STILL appeared larger.

So, what I ended up doing was removing the crossfades/flash transitions and simply creating a new video track above the track where I wanted the transitions and then put a couple of film burns above the areas where I wanted edgy transitions and it worked great. I had to resize the film burns, though.

    Thanks for the reply.

I can’t see how that wouldn’t work. If your nested project was 720×486 and the flash transition was in the nest project, there is no way possible that it could go beyond 720×486 in the 1920×1080 project. It’s physically impossible.
