Transform before Effects?
Hi All,
FCPX question I can’t seem to find an answer for. I have some clips that I want to transform; specifically I’m tuning the framing a bit and I have the pixels to crop them without quality loss in the final 1080p output.
The issue I’m having is that the transform tool in FCPX is applied AFTER the effects are applied, so things like, for example, the Letterbox effect are all distorted after the transform is applied as the letterbox framing is now uncentered or zoomed, etc.
Is there any way to make FCPX apply transformations BEFORE effects are applied? Or is there a Transform plugin I can use in the effects chain INSTEAD of the FCPX “Transform” panel so I can get the transformation going in ahead of my letterboxing?
As a third alternative, is there another good way to do letterboxing that respects the overall order of operations I’m going for? I of course need to able to shift the letterboxed footage up and down to make sure I’m getting what I want into the letterbox (and not under the black bars).

Transform, turn it into a compound clip, apply effects to the compound clip.

You can do this with any filter that includes scaling. If you don’t have one in X, then build one in Motion using the filters there. I created one that you can download from this post (links at bottom):
