I’m looking for an automated way to transform the scale & rotation of multiple layers (I’m talking 50 to a hundred here), based on one hidden layer containing a greyscale (or alpha) composition.

Can this be achieved with expressions?

I want to animate a dotted text (word made up by individual dots, each dot on it’s own layer), by using just one greyscale/alpha comp which transforms them (scale rotate opacity, whatever).

Any other ideas besides the expression or multi layer setup in order to animate the dots are also welcome.

I think Simulation>Card Dance will do what you want.

Search AE Help for “Card Dance”, be sure an look at the “Understanding Card Dance” page as it explains how a grayscale layer controls the cards.

I think you should create the Dot Text you want then animate it with card Dance, then time reverse the layer to get you text to assemble from
a series of flying dots. Card Dance has a 3D camera in the plugin so you can fly around and through your dots.
