I will be editing a film on FCP7 with AVCHD source material. I have no problem with the log and transfer process with AVCHD. The plan is to copy material from the cameras (Panasoni HDC – HS700 and Sony HXRNX5U) onto RAID drives as an archive, and then to additional drives for my use. Can anyone tell me, once the media on the cameras has been transferred to the RAID, and then shooting starts again on the camera, will the camera start recording the same file number again. I’m just wary of the 1st batch of files on the RAID being overwritten by new media transferred from the second batch of shooting. At the moment I am assuming that when files are transferred onto the RAID they should go into a folder with a unique name, and then everything will be OK, but I don’t really know. Has anyone used one of these cameras? Do they revert to the same file name each time the drive is cleared?

Not sure about the Panasonic but my Sony EX-3 always makes a new file number for every shot.

Here’s what you do. You make a separate folder for every card you shoot. Give that card a unique number, or name. Copy the contents of your card into that folder. One folder per card. For example…I use project names and numbers. So if I am working on a project on Andrew Jackson, I would name each folder AJ001, AJ002, AJ003…and so on. TWO cameras? AJ001A, AJ001B… Andrew Jackson…card 1…A camera.

As for importing that footage…with AVCHD, the clips are called Clip #1, Clip #2…right? And every time you put in a new card, it starts over…CLip #1, Clip #2. That’s just plain stupid. But, in FCP you can assign a custom name and incremental numbering to the clips….an option in the L&T window in FCP 7. Do that…FCP will remember the original name, as long as you have them in unique folders. It looks for reel first, then name and timecode.
