I think that I already know the short answer to this question. That answer is Automatic Duck.
I’m just wondering if there is another solution for a one time only situation.
We recently began a rather involved project on our Final Cut system. It (so far) consists of about 30 Betacam SP tapes captured into the system at DVC50 resolution. Due to the fact that we have several other projects pending that are destined to go into FCP and there is a concern that the system is going to get bottlenecked, it was decided to move the project into one of the Avid Symphony systems for on-lining.It’s a bit ironic that the Symphonys are sitting under utilized these days while the Final Cut system is swamped. My, how times have changed.
Anyhow, I want to use the same bins from FCP to batch digitize the footage in the Avid. I know that I could buy Automatic Duck for going from FCP to Avid, but this is pretty much a one time need and would be difficult to justify the cost. Did I also mention it need to be done ASAP?

I need to go from FCP 5.1 to Symphony 3.5. Other than putting the clips on a time line and exporting an EDL, is there another way to trandfer the information to allow the Avid to batch the same tapes?
    Thanks in advance.

Look at Sebsky Tools for moving shot logs from FCP to Avid (FCP shot log to Avid ALE).

    No sequences, just shot logs.

If you don’t want to pay the ticket, an EDL is your next best choice.

It seems that you’re really asking, “How can I transfer my entire project structure over to a SYmphony?” For that, Automatic Duck is your best bet.

    Good luck.

You might try taking a bin full of all the master clips, and export a Final Cut Pro batch list. Then create a database in Cinema Tools and import that batch list. Then export an Avid Log Exchange file. This should import into Avid and give you master clips to capture.

I haven’t done this before, but it should work to get the clips over there.

Do you also have edited sequences?

Basicly what you need is tcIn, tcOut, shotnames/descriptions

You can output that from FCP as text, and you can import that in AVID.
Notiation is sligtly different, but with a text editor, convert text to table, swap a few collumns and you are all set.

Going the EDL route is a needles excercise, and AVID import of EDL’s is, well, funny…

Sebsky Tools is the best & easiest way & it’s free. I use it all the time. You can a batch list from Final Cut to Avid or the other way around. With this tool our producers log all footage in Media Log & export it into FCP.

    Thanks Steven.
I tried your method and it worked just fine. Since each bin is footage destined for a different timeline, I exported each one separatly. I then exported the edited sequences finished so far as EDL’s and they actually came into the Avid clean and worked with no problems. Sometimes ya just get lucky I guess.
    Thanks for the tips guys.
