Transfering Video from VCR
Posted by Chase Mccullan on June 27, 2005 at 1:15 pmHi,
I have a Canon optura 100mc. I thought I new what I was doing but I wasn’t able to use my video camera as a link from my VCR to computer. Im trying to transfer video from my VCR through my camera and to my computer without having to record on any miniDV tape. Is there a way that I don’t know. I thought it might be with the vegas video settings. But if this isn’t possible or Im doing it wrong, please let me know. Thanks very much.

June 27, 2005 at 1:41 pmYou haven’t said much about what you have tried so far. It’s definitely possible, provided your camera has pass through ability, which most do. Some need a menu setting to allow AV in – DV out, and in Vegas you need to disabe Device Control in Capture preferences, otherwise Vegas will expect there to be a tape in the DV camera to capture from.

June 27, 2005 at 6:42 pmThanks very much for the reply. So far I’ve done all the wireing VCR-> Camera-> Computer. I’ve gone into Vegas Video (V.6) and I’ve disabed the Device Control in Capture preferences. when I’ve pressed play on the VCR and turned my camera to VCR and then pressed record mode, it only seems to record on the Video Camera tape and not pass through the firewire to my computer.
I called canon and asked about the pass through feature. They said that none of their cameras have that feature. When I did a lot of searching online it showed that some canon cameras do have that feature. But I haven’t been able to find anything about the opturea 100MC. If you or anyone else can answer my question (because the guy at the camera store couldn’t) I would really appreciate knowing if my camera is ‘pass throug-able’. If there is anything else that I can explain about what I did to make things easier let me know. Thanks again.

June 27, 2005 at 7:04 pmThere is one more thing that I forgot to mention, it seems that if I plug in the Firewire cable it stops the video that I can see from the VCR that shows on my camcorder screen. So it seems like only one wire can be plugged in at once. I don’t know if that gives anymore usefull info. Thank.

As you’ve already discovered, the person you spoke to at Canon never bothered to read the manual as, according to p. 88 of the manual, your camera does indeed have this feature.
1. Connect the camcorder to the VCR.
2. Prepare the device.
3. Turn the camcorder -

June 27, 2005 at 8:35 pmHey Mike,
Thanks for the reply. I have the manual and I looked at pg 88 but it doesn’t show the signal flow going out to the computer, only to the video camera. Now normally, I wouldn’t mind transfering my video from VHS to minyDV and then have to retransfer it from minyDV to my computer but I have over 8 tapes to do, so it would be doubling my time if I do it that way and not directly.
I’ve spend all day calling around different places and I think my best bet is to geta video capture card for my laptop. When I spoke with the guy at the store he said that the capture card will reduce quality so it’s not a really good idea. The one available is by Dazzle and it’s called D.V. creator. I’m gonna go on the internet and do a search about quality but whatever you guys can add about this method would be great. Thanks.

June 28, 2005 at 12:40 amI’ve heard a few bad things about Dazzle. I think a better way to go is an Analogue/Digital converter, which has analogue in/outs and firewire – ADS do one, as does Canopus – but only when you are sure that your camnera won’t do pass through.

June 28, 2005 at 5:16 amI also have a Canon camcorder and I was able to capture the signal from the Canon camcorder with Premiere. (Sadly, Vegas does not allow you to record the 1394 signal from the camcorder unless it is pulling it from the tape. You could see the signal but you could not record it because the only option you’re allowed is to capture from tape.)

June 28, 2005 at 6:06 amThis is not true – if Device Control is enabled then Vegas will look for a tape, but once this is unchecked a camera can be used as pass through for an analogue source.

June 28, 2005 at 3:12 pmYou guys are right! I was looking in Vegas main program for that option and was not able to find it. It was in the Vegas capture program. Apologies.
