Transfering Project between systems
Posted by Scott Witthaus on October 24, 2005 at 12:58 amHey all –
I have a client bringing in a project from another FCP 4.5 system to mine on a FW drive. I want to transfer the material to my Media array. I am assuming I find all the capture, render, audio, folders and the project folder and just bring them in. Any gotcha’s in this workflow? Thanks in advance

October 24, 2005 at 1:00 amNot that I can see. Just reconnect the media and you are good to go.
Unless they happen to have media (pictures, music) stored somewhere else, or renders. That happens sometimes.

October 24, 2005 at 1:04 amThe biggest thing to do is after you transfer all the media, eject their drive and open the project. Reconnect all the media to your drives. See if everything is there. If anything is missing, reconnect their drive and transfer the missing material.
Very important to open and project with that drive disconnected because FCP will automatically reconnect to the media if that drive is on the desktop. Only by taking that drive offline can you ensure that everything is on your drives.

I wouldn’t bother transferring the render files. It’s a breeze to just select all and rerender.

That’s a good point because FCP won’t recognize them correctly as soon as they are moved anyway.

October 24, 2005 at 4:51 pmIn FCP 4.5 I’ve used Media Manager to successfully move render files from one FCP station to another.
Haven’t tried it in FCP 5 yet…

I never let the Media Manager touch any of my projects unless it is an absolute last resort. I’d rather re-render.
some folks I know have had good luck with it, I avoid it.

October 24, 2005 at 7:22 pmCheck all your time remaps. They often don’t relink correctly. If you check the remap in the motion tab it’s pretty easy to spot the bad key frames. Make sure fonts match from system to system. Freeze frames almost never make it thru a system transfer.

October 24, 2005 at 8:00 pmOK, most of the media came over well. Question: since my client brought me about 8 versions to play with, is there a way to render every effect in a project or is this basically a sequence by sequence deal? thanks.
