  • Transfering from Avid Express 4.1 to MC Adrenaline HD

It’s been a while since I’ve been around these parts. I did some searching and found a couple of possible ideas for my question, but I figured I’d ask here while my databases are rebuilt!

We have an old xpress v4.1 (meridian board) and a Media Composer Adrenaline HD v2.1.3.

The older avid hasn’t been used much, but there are some legacy projects we’d like to transfer to the new system so we can the the old system offline.

I’ve used MediaMover to transport the files for the project between the two computers (via network). I imported them into the OMFI on the newer avid.

I copied the project folder to the newer system also. Avid opened it, and not surprizingly the footage was offline. I’ve tried the Relink feature, but no luck either.

Someone suggested trying to “import” the bins. I just tried this and the file format (*.avb) is not supported.

At this point I’m just searching for any ideas or confirmation that this is not possible.

I plan to give Avid a call in the morning, but like I said, I figured I’d try here while the database was rebuilding.

    Thanks for any help!

You should be able to do it. I take projects from our Xpress Meridien v6.1 to our Xpress Pro v5.6 and MC Adrenaline v2.6 all the time without problems.

When you transferred the media (OMFI and audio files) from the Meridien to the Adrenaline you put them directly into the OMFI MediaFiles folder of your media drive on the adrenaline, right? Not within their own OMFI folder within the OMFI folder? (You’d be surprised how often this happens).

If you did that, the media should be recognized.

As far as projects go–I wouldn’t try to open them on the MC. Importing the bins is the way to go, but calling it importing is kind of a misnomer.

What’s meant by importing bins isn’t to do a File–>Import, but rather create a new project by the exact same name as the project you’re bringing in from the Xpress, then do an Open Bin from your project window and navigate to the Bins from the Xpress projects. This will ensure you have a MC project and you’re only bringing in the Master clips from the Xpress bins, not all the antiquated Xpress project settings.

When I do this I will typically make new bins in the Media Composer after I open the Xpress bins, then I copy all master clips from the Xpress bins to the new bins so if anything is corrupted in the process I haven’t ruined the original clips. I’m paranoid too, though.

Once you do this you should be ready to go. You might have to do a File–>Reload Media Databases or Refresh (I can’t remember which), but it should link up. If it doesn’t, I’m not sure what’s going on.

Best of luck! Let us know how it turns out.

    Michael.

It’s probably a good idea to delete the Avid Media database files (msmFMID.pmr and msmMMOB.mdb) from the OMFI directory on the Adrenaline machine. This will force the Adrenaline to re-index the media files and it should find the new stuff. I transfer projects between Xpress Pro machines and Xpress Pro and Adrenaline quite often. Move the files across, delete the database files and then load the Adrenaline. You should get a message saying ‘Indexing [drive]’.

I can also recommend MediaSift (www.senkou.com) for physically moving OMFI files around. I’m not sure if Media Mover is the same thing, but MediaSift works very well.

    Hope you get it fixed.

    Thanks for the help guys.

I’m an outside guy and don’t spend everyday at the location with the AVIDs, so it took me a few days to get back here.

Thanks on the import / file>Open tip… On my drive home I thought about that as the option.

I did move a handful of files over and imported the project and those clips appeared! So… it works, just as both of you suggested.

A couple of follow up questions.

In addition to the OMFI folder & files on the media drives, there seems to be another folder set that I did not create!

    \AVID MediaFiles\
    \AVID MediaFiles\1\
    \AVID MediaFiles\1\MXF
    \AVID MediaFiles\1\MXF\Creating

The odd thing about this is I can’t seem to move or delete the files in this folder. I’ve attempted this while the MC program is not running.
Even more odd is in that main folder is all the files that I copied to this system and then I thought I imported in the OMFI folder. I have checked the OMFI media folder, and none of these files are in there.

The only other files are a handful of MXF files that are really old and the typical database files, both are located in the MXF folder.

I am fairly certain that I did move them to the OMFI folder once they were all on the local system.

Any thoughts on what this folder is?

I haven’t tried to move the files after a reboot, or in safe mode yet… as I am copied a load of files from the next project.
