  • Transfer mode settings on a layer appearing odd when applied to my particle playgrounds comp??

Posted by Gizmo1990 on February 11, 2006 at 6:47 pm

I’m assigning a layer map to my particles and I’ve set the precomp layer’s transfer mode to ‘Classic color dodge’ to create a nice ‘glowy’ bloom.

However in my main comp where I have particle playground activated, the layer mapped particles appear all washed out with dark halos around them?

I don’t understand why this is happening?

Shouldn’t changes I make in a precomp be carried through?

    Any help really appreciated.

I’ve been testing whether changes I make to my precomp layer map actually carry through, opacity/scale/rotations etc etc and they seem to work fine. However any transfer modes I set the layer to don’t come through at all.

Does anyone know what I’m doing wrong or is this supposed to be like this? How can I get my particles looking nice and glowy (with colours multiplying over the top of one another as they move) if I can’t apply any transfer modes!? 🙁 🙁

    Any help really appreciated.

    Sorted it. 🙂

It was very simple but completely the opposite of what I’d been told regarding pre-comping and pp.

The transfer mode has to be applied to the particle playground layer NOT the pre-comped ‘Layer maps’ layer…

I can go to sleep happy now.

Just to clarify, when applying a Transfer mode to the PP layer, the particles blend with the layers below, but not with each other. For more advanced blending options of particles, download the demo of Trapcode Particular and give it a go.

Yes they blend with the layers below them in their own comp but NOT in the pp comp. The pp comp ignores any transfer mode on incoming layer maps.

Therefore the pp comp itself has to have a transfer mode applied.

Andrew, would you recommend trapcode particular? After this job I no longer want to use pp anymore! I’m sure some people love it but it seems very very difficult and unwieldy to do even simple things.

Your description of PP is spot on – frankly, it’s a dog. Particular is fantastic – incredibly powerful, easy to use, and with the added advantage of working in 3D with AE cameras. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Also, don’t forget that AE 6.5’s Cycore Effects include Particle World (and a few other particle plugins as well) – certainly not as good as particular, but very simple to use and quite effective in many ways, plus heaps cheaper if you already have them.
