  • Transcoding HDV sequence to ProRes!!

…so I hear it can be done…but I’m not sure how to do it properly. My final sequence is native HDV 1080p24 (i.e. 23.98fps). I’ve gone through the process of setting up my sequence in the Media Manager for recapturing, as well as recompressing. When I get ready to do the former, and attempt to batch capture my offline sequence copy, FCP won’t ask me for any specific tape, it just starts a capture from scratch by asking me to name the file. When I attempt to recompress, having set “recompress media to” “Apple ProRes 422 1440 x 1080 24p 48 kHz,” I get an error message that says:

“The frame rate of the preset chosen for recompression differs from items in your selection. The preset’s frame rate will be ignored, and the original frame rate of the items in your selection retained.”

I don’t want to risk trashing my project, so could someone please walk me through this workflow?

    Thanks!!

I am not doing exactly what you are but am taking an offline sequence of DVCProHD that was captured at SD and upresing to HD. It also has some HDV that we captured at full res originally for fear of timecode issues. So far the process we have used has been pretty flawless except for a few tapes that were logged incorrectly with the wrong reel name.

Do your low res clips have reel names? What settings are you using in media manager?

The way that I do it is:

Using media manager, make final textless sequence offline, set sequences to whatever your final upresed clips will be and give 1-3 sec handles depending on drive space. Make sure to uncheck use master clips outside of selection and use affiliate clips outside of selection; When promted, save new project.

    For the HDV clips:
Duplicate new sequence of offline clips and reconnect hdv to original source. Check that all have reconnected properly and delete everything in the sequence but the HDV clips. Media Manage again using the setting “Recompress” and your final sequence settings. Uncheck Include master clips. Check Delete unused media and set handles to 1-3 second. Set the media destination. After the HDV sequence is created, go through it and blow up the picture to 100% and remove any distort. Copy the clips from the HDV sequence and add them in the proper place in the textless sequence with the offline clips.

Copy text from original sequence to new sequence and fix accordingly.

    I hope this workflow helps.
