  • Transcoding Canon 5d3 footage for Premiere Pro CS5.5

Posted by Owen Packard on March 27, 2013 at 6:06 pm

I am working on a huge project with all kinds of file types, and for the first time i am using Canon 5d3 footage. the 5d2 clips i have are fine. but when i try to import anything from the 5d3 the PC just hangs and then crashes.

I figure my best bet is to use Adobe Encoder to convert the 5d3 footage into something friendlier for Premiere Pro 5.5 – any ideas? I am unsure of what to convert these files to.

I have found some advice online, but it all seems to be MAC specific!!!

Like everything else in the project the files are 1080 24fps.

    Any help gratefully received.

    Hey Owen,

Since you using a PC (right?) I would recommend the best alternative to ProRes is Aivd DnxHD, it will be wrap in a .mov extension. You can download the codec here =>> https://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/download/en392959?popup=true

that’s awesome. many thanks. i have downloaded and ‘run’ the installer.

i know this is probably a stupid question – but how do i now use these codecs? there are no extra options in adobe encoder?

Choose “Quicktime” as your format option (same place where you select mp3, wav, jpeg, h.264, etc.) and then you can change the “codec” to DNxHD in a different drop down menu just below the format option.

Owen, you might be better off just upgrading to 6.0. I don’t have any issues using MKiii footage in CS6. I’ll try it with 5.5 when I get a chance.
