Transcoding AF100 AVCHD files for use in FCP
Hello- Sorry if this has already been addressed.
Going to be shooting alot of AVCHD/PH quality footage with the Pana AF100 in a very concentrated amount of time, and then editing soon after, and so want to get as much of a head start on my FCP workflow as I can, in the field. Won’t reasonably be able to bring FCP app on location but can bring Compressor or MPEG Streamclip and so thought I could at least start transcoding to the project’s primary edit codec, Pro Res 422 LT.
Thing is I tried opening up the Pana AF100 file folders in both Compressor and MPEG SC and neither seemed to recognize them (though FCP 7 did.) Wondering if there’s some kind of plug-in/download I need?
Also, still very much a novice with those apps – do either of them allow you do batch re-name the files, a la FCP’s log and transfer tool?

Well, if you want to encode to ProRes, you’ll need FCP installed. That codec…all of the ProRes codecs…only come with FCP.
That being said, you need specific software designed to read and convert AVCHD…and ClipWrap2 is an application that I use for this. But again, you need FCP installed on that computer to get those codecs.

You guys are right. Will just bring FCP to set.
2 more (hopefully) quick questions – presumably Compressor or FCP maintains original AVCHD time code after transcode? And can you batch re-name in Compressor like you can in FCP log & transfer tool?

tc is maintained in the l&t process for the af100, yes. compressor will maintain the clip tc if you l&t and then drag the files from capture scratch to compressor.

Not like that, no, but you can setup custom naming if you’d like.
If bring fcp, why do you need compressor? just curious as to what you are trying to do, perhaps we can help.
