Transcode/Consolidate Multiple Bins

Since you need to highlight the clips you want to transcode, and you can have only one bin active at a time…you can only transcode one bin at a time. YOU CAN, if you want, put all the clips in ONE bin, and then transcode.

Thanks, Shane, that workflow is an old one that I dread.
Since these are AMA RED files and need to be in their shot date folders I will need to do an old trick I found in Avid forum.
The one where you place all files in one BIN 😛

Although I’ve found “transcode in the background” to be a little hit and miss, wouldn’t that allow you to set off each bin’s clips as a transcode job?

Yup background is the answer. Fire off each bin. Reverse selection to now highlight the. New clips and move to new bin. Use it all the time.

Could you stick all clips into one timeline, in its own bin, enable ‘show reference clips’ & transcode those master clips?

You’d need to relink the old ones bin by bin after the transcode though

Oh good lord I forgot I was on MC 2018.x
I didn’t think about background processing.
I did it anyway using ALT drag but did run into an issue with sub-clips.
They would not transfer over.
I had to switch on/off in bin display option to get past that problem.

Ultimately the requestor asked that I just copy the MXF folders to a big drive and send.
She checked out the project structure via screen share and did not like that all the files were not in its original BINs.
Oh well, that was fun.

Its quite common practice to use the Tape.id field (never the tape number) to store the source clips folder name.
If you then do have to make one large bin of those clip you can sort by tape.id and easily pull them back out in groups.

Alternatively you can pull up the source file path column heading and use that to sort and sift.

Will they keep their original BIN placement this way?

Now is this in reference to Consolidating the sub-clips?

They won’t “keep” their original placement. The idea is you make 1 huge bin, but by sorting them you can much more easily put them back where they belong after the fact.
