Tranlations needed between Media 100 and Final Cut Pro regarding .xml’s

Short answer, it can’t be done.

Long answer, XML is not a universal standard that can be used to interchange projects between different non-linear editing systems. It’s a markup language used for all kinds of things, even web sites. The way Apple uses XMLs for their NLE and the way Media 100 does are completely different from one another. The reason I know this is because I did indeed try to figure out a way to convert between the two. Upon examining the XMLs, they are both drastically different from each other.

One example is that Apple uses fields to determine actual SMTP timecode numbers. Media 100 instead uses a number that represents the amount of frames. In other words, Apple would call the duration of a 5 sec clip “00:00:05:00”, while Media 100 would call it “150” frames long.

That’s just one example. There’s a lot more. It would take ages to figure out a way to translate between the two.

What version of Media100 to what version of FCP? The last version of Media100 I used was Media 100i 7.5 on the Mac.

To get my old projects from M100 to FCP I used the CMX 3600 EDL export. The caveat is your reel names need to be 8 characters or the EDL will truncate them to 8 which may become unrecognizable.

This only works for simple timelines with just cuts and maybe a few dissolves. Effects don’t translate if I remember correctly. Your graphics may or may not come in as named placeholders.

You might want to rephrase your post to “Translation from Media 100 to Final Cut Pro via AAF/OMF possible?” I would include your work flow in the post to answer the question of why the project started in M100 and then ended up in FCP. It is easier for people to suggest workarounds.

You might want to read this article to see all the players in the AAF/OMF scheme EventDV.net: AAF Gets Traction–but be aware that of the time this article 2003 everything was vaporware (theoretical).

Maybe you could come up with some lashup by exporting as OMF–as if going to Avid–from M100 and use Automatic Duck Pro Import FCP to read the file, but this is a $495 experiment on you part.

maybe try posting the original message, and examples of the two different xml files on a forum which programmers frquent, maybe someone can write a program to make the conversion.
