Trails/ghosts in my videos
Posted by Dar Tamayo on October 14, 2009 at 6:45 pmCan someone help me understand why I’m getting these trails/ghosts in my videos I render from Sony Vegas?
I’ve attached a screen shot.
https://productioneditors.com/trails.png
On the left side, I rendered uncompressed MOV as DRAFT quality. On the right side, I rendered uncompressed MOV as BEST quality. I then marked the screen shots in the exact area and on the right you can see ghosts/trails if you look around the guys head. I want to always use Best quality as I’m not in a rush, but when I view the video I see these trails/ghosts wherever there’s movement. Why is this? Can someone explain why I get this on my videos? I’m pretty sure my source material doesn’t have these trails. Why are they being made?I’m using 24p material and project is setup as progressive 24fps. But this also happens using other material DVD/mpeg2, 29.97 fps, etc.

Are you rendering to 24p? If not, this is what’s causing the ghosting. It’s because Vegas needs to blend frames to telecine from 24p to 29.97. If you render using 24p and your project and source footage are 24p, then you should not see this.

October 14, 2009 at 8:58 pmThank you very much for responding John. When I open the source file in Quicktime, it says 23.98fps My Vegas project had the frame rate preset of 24.0 (Film). Should I change it to the other preset of 23.976 (IVTC Film) or just manually enter 23.98? Or does it even matter much since it’s basically 24 seconds?
Also unsure why it doesn’t do it when I render with the Draft quality and not the Best quality.

October 14, 2009 at 9:01 pmI forgot to mention, yes, I’m rendering to 24.0 fps. I’m not rendering to 29.97fps or 30fps.

It matters a lot. The 24.0 (Film) setting is only to be used when you have true film conversion footage (i.e., video that has been transferred from film). You want to use the 23.976 (IVTC Film) project setting for 24p video that originated as video (which is really 23.976 but we call it 24p because we are lazy).

I’m not sure but I would guess that draft quality doesn’t bother to blend the frames in the interest of speed. (just a wild guess on my part) 😉

…and hopefully you really mean 23.976fps. 😉

I’ve just rendered about 10 different 3 second clips to compare different frame rate settings and quality, and it’s come down to what you said above. Vegas is blending the frames together. How can I tell Vegas to not blend frames without setting the quality down to draft or preview (just tested and preview doesn’t blend either)? I’ve gone to the project settings and tried to change the deinterlace mode from blend to interpolate and none, and I get the same problem.
Another screenshot: https://productioneditors.com/blend.jpg
top 2 I used Best quality. The one on the right i went to the project settings and chose none for deinterlace mode. Still same issue.
Bottom 2 screen shots are choosing the draft and preview quality.
If you notice the guy’s leg running out to the right side, the top 2 have the blend trail and the bottom 2 do not.I just want to set it to not blend frames, but be in Best quality mode. Any other suggestions?

October 14, 2009 at 11:12 pmI suffer from those problems on a regular basis
Few things to try:
1. It’s a bit strange but try to restart computer before you render. and don’t use the computer while rendering. (give it a try and see, perhaps some jitter may occur otherwise)
2. try make an interlace test. render a section with: 1. progressive scan, 2. upper field first, 3. lower field first. and compare.
3. I tend to believe that motion in vegas, generally speaking, is problematic. I hope I’m wrong, but It doesn’t looks high quality motion in my opinion. especially slow motion.
4. if you have “ghosts” in events of slow motion try also:
event properties
reduce interlace flicker (check box)
resample: nonegood luck

October 14, 2009 at 11:13 pmI think I got it figured out now. After dozens of re-rendering the same clip over and over with different settings. I was able to get it to not show the ghosting while in best mode.
I went to right click the clip, chose properties, I had Smart resample chosen by default, I changed this to Disable resample. Rendered and got rid of the ghosting artifacts.
Life is good now!

October 14, 2009 at 11:41 pmJust curious,
did the clip had anything to do with slow motion ?

Yup. That’s what I was going to suggest next. You should not need to do this if everything was 23.976 (project, media, & render) but if it works… don’t knock it. 😉
