  • Track Motion 16:9 to letterboxed 4:3

Posted by Dale Spetz on July 29, 2009 at 2:08 pm

I often setup multiple video frames–using Track Motion and Pan/Zoom—within a a 16:9 aspect ratio project. Sometimes, I need to convert this project to letterboxed 4:3.

While Pan/Zoom arranged items seem to properly (proportionately) convert to the letterboxed 4:3, items that have been arranged with Track Motion do not appear correctly in letterboxed 4:3.

Does anyone know of a way to lock down Track Motion frames so that they can be converted to a smaller sized project–with the proper proportions?

My current workaround is to render each of these segments as 16:9 (effectively locking them down into a new video), then convert this new rendered track to 4:3. But, this seems like an unnecessary and time-consuming extra step.

Im not too sure, but try changing the project properties
when you are ready to the 4:3 ratio and then go to your track
motion and right click to select match output aspect.
    looking for your results.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to do it. It seems that it is only the “y” value placement that doesn’t properly relocate, when going from 16:9 to letterbox 4:3.

Since the letterboxed image spans the entire width of the 4:3 frame, the “x” values properly reposition. But, since the 4:3 frame is proportionately taller than a 16:9 frame, the “y” values want to reposition within the entire 4:3 frame, as opposed to just its letterbox portion. This places them outside of the upper and lower letterbox margins.

This is the strange thing about Track Motion and how Vegas renders different aspects. I agree that you would expect that nothing outside the 16:9 project should be rendered but that’s not how Vegas works. You’ll have to place your own black bars on the top and bottom of your project when rendering to 4:3 in order to mask the Track Motion behavior. 🙁

After working with this a little more, I see that it is not actually such a big deal. I just have to redetermine what the new letterbox 4:3 “y” values are. These new values are consistent, so I can apply then to the entire tracks.

Vegas does properly resize the images, as well proportionately redetermine the proper “x” values.

This is true if the width of the images has not been altered in Pan/Zoom. If the width has been changed, then the new letterbox 4:3 width must be redetermined.

At least, this is what I have found.
