I add a new video track in SV, above the clips, to add an overlay. It looks best on Darken or Hard Light, the problem is that I don’t want it on the entire video and so, the rest of it, where the overlay isn’t applied, is very very dark, sometimes full black because of the mode I put the overlay. Is there a way to set only the overlay to that particular mode and not affect the whole video, ’cause is really annoying.

I think making track parents and children helps eradicate this. Or you could put your other footage above the track with the overlay thing?

I did the second thing, thanks. What’s the “parents and children” thing? :-s

It’s that thing where you make babies and call them your children, and they call you their parents

In the context of Sony Vegas, it’s when you have video track(s) below another another video track that you wish to ‘foster’ the other tracks as children. You then press this little square purple arrow thing on the children to elect them into the foster care of the desired parent, and the two tracks will amalgamate in a way, and I think if the child track has the compositing mode the rest of the tracks outside of the family are liberated from it.
