  • Track and pan with a projectile through multiple video files.

Hi, I have a bit of an odd question. Is there a way to track an object or pan over multiple clips in After Effects?

I am capturing a projectile with four different highspeed cameras triggered in sync, and i want to put those next to each other so that I can show the continous flight path of the projectile over the four different videos. Is there a way to track this so I can pan the videofiles past a full HD window to achieve a similar look like in the video below:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uN1TZ4Yr0nc

The video is taken with Specialised Imaging’s Tracker system, but don’t have access to such a system and I was hoping to solve it as described above.

    Thanks

    Fredrik

    Hi Dave!

Thanks for getting back to me.
I don’t need the perspective to change like in the video, and I understand that it will not be possible with multiple cameras. I actually prefer the footage to be as “flat” as possible, since it will make the individual clips line up much better.

I have been doing some research and it looks like this will be possible if I line up the clips next to each other in a 3D space and then track the object of interest and pan across the videofile with a 3D camera.
Any tips on good info on how to do this is greatly appreciated, as my After Effects skills isn’t that advanced yet.

    Thanks again.

    -Fredrik

As I see it, it is more of a question on how to stitch the four views together seamlessly, which is a bit hard to say without seeing the shots. I don’t see a reason for it to be in 3D, since it is four static cameras. But you will likely need to deal with the perspective difference in the four shots as well as the lens distortion and possibly vignetting (darkening at the edges), as well as any color and exposure differences.

Once you get them stitched together as one long horizontal comp, you can output that as a single piece of footage and then track the projectile in 2D and stabilize the shot around the projectile.
