Totally OT: Best HD reference monitor under $3K?
Posted by Herb Sevush on November 15, 2012 at 5:54 pmPardon the interruption but my monitor has just died and I need a reference monitor suitable for mastering. I’m not a colorist but I need something more than a Dell – I need a true HD video reference monitor. I know Flanders Scientific has a great rep, is there anyone else I should be considering, any models someone wants to recommend for under $3000.

November 15, 2012 at 11:57 pmAs long as you’re going SDI. Their component input is pretty fuzzy, and they don’t have real HDMI, they have 8 bit DVI. They have a lot of cool features like audio meters and TC in screen, but only via SDI ( although I found that their website says the features are across all inputs.
Once I got the ultrastudio express with SDI I was extremely happy with my LM-2140W. And they keep updating the firmware too. A little bummed I couldn’t use my blu-ray or cabletv with the DVI input because even with a converter, consumer HDMI devices require some sort of decryption signal stuff.
There’s really hardly any competition in this class and price range.

MSRP is $6,100 but they can be had for less.
We’ve got a bunch of these. I really like them!

November 16, 2012 at 4:53 pmJust in case you needed a monitor for just over double $3k. 😀
If you are going to Dreamcolor route (I have one, and love it), use the AJA HDP2 over the Blackmagic as you will have more format options.
Cheers.

November 16, 2012 at 5:32 pmI also have a Dreamcolor and it’s pretty great – though the extra 2 grand for the OLED Sony would be worth it in my opinion.

November 16, 2012 at 6:46 pmThank you everyone for your suggestions. I ended up going with the Flanders 2140; for the price with all it’s tools, scopes, audio pass through for accurate sync it seems to be all the monitor I need.
