So all the problems I had with the fire wire port in both my DCR TRV 340 cameras turned out to be pinned on the PORT itself. So I played around with iMovie on my Mac and hated it. Ordered another DCR TRV 340 and filmed a tutorial tonight. After I edited it on Sony Vegas which was the program I have been using for a year now.. Platinum 10, I found that when I set my project properties for 320 x 240 (which always shortened the upload time, and still did a good job for me) I saw that my Project Render would not take the 320 x240 as it used to and reverted to the large 720 file. I swear I used all the same settings and now I am stuck with a huge file that will take crazy hours of time. Could the current camera which is the same model as the others be the problem. The settings don’t look different from the others. It has to be something to do with Vegas. Any ideas.

I still had used the wide screen BEFORE with 320 X 240 without a problem..and the 1.2121 same.. What’s up now that’s different than before? This is driving me mad.

just to mention that I have a PC Dell. and capture using the Dell.

Something is up here, and I have no idea what it is. I also can’t find my preview window.

I couldn’t use Vegas while I was waiting for my new camera.

That shouldn’t have anything to do with the Project Property settings and the render.

for 8 minutes of video it gave me a 1.73 GB file.. Unheard of.. as I used to upload the same time in 15 or so minutes.. What’s up here.. Just because I introduce the same model camera, but a different one, why did this happen. why did the render settings not pick up the project properties 320×240 that processes much quicker..

My upload will take 8 plus hours. This is ludicrous. And how can I get the preview window..and the normal set up on the Vegas page?

You should be able to restore the original Vegas screen layout from the main menu: View > Window Layouts > Default Layout.

The render settings are almost independent of project settings. You can have your project set up for 320×240 and still render to any size, even HD.

If you’re going to use 320×240, then the project properties should have pixel aspect of 1.0 and field order of “progressive”.

It makes sense to render at the same size, so make sure you choose a suitable render preset, or modify the settings to suit your project.

For video site uploads to youtube etc, use the “Sony AVC” render type and choose the nearest preset – probably “Internet 320×240-30p”. That will give you fairly modest file sizes at reasonable quality. It sounds like you mistakenly rendered to an uncompressed AVI file.

thanks for the great advice. I discovered after trial and error that I had the AVI file you mentioned.. so I switched to WMV. So the upload moved quicker but the quality was not good. My old settings vanished, as it were. And I now have a kind of square looking frame.. and better video–but not like before. I switched from 100KBS to 512KBS and typed in the ratio of 1.2121 but I think it reverted to the square.
I did pump up the video quality to 100% that used to be there automatically before. The settings were changed. It’s better now for the tutorial that runs 8 or so minutes. I was through the wringer on this one. But I hated the short romp I had with iMovie on my Mac. Yuck.
The other thing is I wonder if I can plug an external YETI mike into my sony camcorder, DCR nTRV 340.. and older model.. but better for me than the flashy stuff.

Did you get a satisfactory render (output video) after all that? WMV might not be great for video uploads. The normal way is to render your video to the Sony AVC format, and use one of the Internet presets.

If you’re uploading to Youtube, then try Vegas’s built-in Youtube uploader, which takes out all the guesswork. Just click “Upload to Youtube” on the Project menu.

I think the Yeti mic is USB only, so there’s no chance of plugging it into a camcorder. It’s only designed to connect to a computer for direct recording. You need some sort of video mic to suit the camera, probably one that uses “plug power” and a 3.5mm jack connector.

Another possibility is to use something like the Yeti mic to record the audio to your computer at the same time as you record video onto tape. Then you need to sync up the audio in Vegas, but this can get tricky…

Thanks for you input. Thing is, I need my tutorials up pronto with a semblance of auditory and visual clarity. I must say that my DCR TRV has a pervasive rolling noise.. no matter. So I posted my blog with the embedded video. The content is good, but all the rest, as far as recording clarity is not. Today, I used the iMac 21, did NOT edit and got the crystal clear sound with YETI. Like night and day. With Vegas, I do some serious editing when I have to. I have no experience with iMac.. but hands down I’m getting good downloads on the MEDIUM setting with took an hour for 11 minute footage. Yesterday on Vegas, given my settings, for 8 minutes, it took about 10 minutes..

if you use microphone, run the camcorder using battery not from the charger/power supply plugged into AC outlet, because it produces noise in Audio.

Interesting.. so would the built in mic in camcorder have circumvented noise by running on battery alone when recording.

If I plug in an external mic, it would have to be analog?

I like my Yeti but it’s USB.

it is still digital, embedded in your video. most consumer camcorder cannot produce good audio because the lack of manual controls, etc. Running in battery will lessen the noise. Try it and check the audio if it is acceptable to you.

sorry for my bad English, just trying to help 🙂

thanks, again. I will try filming on battery alone today..

I think for capture, the plug in is recommended.

Someone recommended that I lower the volume to ZERO when recording to filter out noise. But that didn’t work.
