    Hi,
My work is getting some training for after effects and have asked me to choosee between total training standard for AE 6.5 or the 3 meyer books (cmg vol.1, cmg vol.2 & after effects in production). I have a fair understanding of after effects but the other guy I work with doesn’t know after effects at all. Most of the work we do is in motion graphics, but I don’t know which would be a better starting point. Most of the training I’ve done so far is from the creative cow forums, but I don’t know where I’d rank myself as an after effects user, probably a bit above novice, and like I said, the other guy who will be doing the training has no AE experience at all. Cost isn’t an issue, so I was wondering if anyone has had experience with either of these books or DVDs, or if there is a better option I’ve overlooked.

    Thanks

    Brock

Like Franktatu, I also learn more quickly and easier from DVD video than I do from books. We are in a visual medium and seeing things happen as they are discussed, genuinely helps speed the right brain processes. The CMG books are superb, along with Angie Taylor’s which is also extremely well done, but if you have the money, the TT DVDs are insanely good and no book could possibly live up to them. Consider TT a book on steroids. The books are great for reference materials but the DVDs excel as teaching materials.

I agree, I’ve already done some work from the TT DVDs, I’m really asking if there’s enough stuff in the TT DVDs about motion graphics. I think I could pick up most of the stuff from the CMG books and help the other guy along, but the TT DVDs don’t seem to have much about mgraphics. I’m more asking if I can learn enough about the principles of Mgraphics from the TT DVD’s or if it’s more suited to ppl who use AE for most other things than M graphics.

    Hey there,

    Consider these:
    https://www.totaltraining.com/prod/adobe/aftereffect7pro_adv.asp?mscsid=

    https://www.deanvelez.com/

I have watched most of them out there and am still learning from them, including Maffitt and Holmes as well as Lynda, but Dean is “good” (for me).. I cannot stop watching his stuff..

Click on PLAY ME on his site to see for yourself 😉

I have both the books and the TT DVDs and consider both to be invaluable. If you are going to use AE 7 though and are not familiar with the interface, both could be confusing for someone beginning to learn the program. The AE 7 TT videos are good and will get you up and running quickly, but they don’t have the completeness of the 6.5 version, which gives indepth explanations of not only the interface, but most of the plugins, including the CC (Cycore) plugins.
