What would you guess is the motion/effects application that’s used to create the openings and other dramatic background graphics for networks like ESPN, Fox, etc…

Can Motion or AE do that?

I’m just trying to get a feel for the capabilities and limitations of Motion and After Effects.

    Thanks!

It depends. It would be better if you show a specific look you are after. However, I find that most “news” type graphics are 3D graphics. So they are built in a 3D program like Maya. If you want to do 3D graphics take a look at plug-ins such as Zaxwerks Pro Animator FX.

When I worked in news, the gfx were built in a variety of programs both 3D and other. Maya, Lightwave, Combustion, After Effects. Later, they were all replaced by a dedicated program that integrates the 3D gfx with the CG/Still Store and can be triggered by the switcher. All their gfx pkgs are now built solely in the new program (can’t remember the name, but not well known outside of broadcast news).
