  • Toon shader issue – weird color effect

Posted by Justin Spencer on December 6, 2008 at 4:28 pm

I am new to C4D. Forgive my dumb questions but I am just learning my way around this program and have a deadline to meet.

I am working on a short animation for a class and am having a lot of problems figuring out why the toon shader is causing my grass to change color when the camera moves up overhead. I have an animated scene with a camera following a woman walking down a path. We see her from the front, then she walks by and the camera follows her from behind and moves up overhead. The sky behind her is background so it does not change color in the scene, but the grass is a disc-shaped object and is changing from a dark green to light green as the camera moves overhead. At this point in my project I cannot abandon the toon shading but this weird effect is unacceptable. I am sure it has to do with the cell shading and how it handles light change.

    1) Is it possible to make the ground object transparent so that I can add it in as a background in After Effects? Is this easy to do?

    2) Is there a simple way to not toon shade the ground but to toon shade everything else?

I am looking for the fastest way to solve this problem as I need to turn in this project in 2 days and I have almost no experience with the program. My professor says that I need to solve this before I submit it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

With Sketch and Toon you can turn off the S&T for an object by adding a Sketch Render tag to it and uncheck Allow Lines and Allow Shading (or Exclude the object in Render Settings/Sketch and Toon/Render). Can’t turn off the Cel Renderer for one object.
Are you using a light above the scene or just the default light?

“With Sketch and Toon you can turn off the S&T for an object by adding a Sketch Render tag to it and uncheck Allow Lines and Allow Shading (or Exclude the object in Render Settings/Sketch and Toon/Render).”

Thank you very much for your suggestions Brian. I am only using a default light in my scene with the woman walking.

Sorry for being dumb but I do not know how to add a Sketch Render tag to an object. Is it difficult to do this?

I decided to try your second suggestion, excluding the specific object in the Render Settings, but feel kind of dumb now because I cannot see a list of objects under the drop down arrow. In other words, I can see the “Exclude” Mode but when I click on the object arrow below it there are no objects listed for me to exlude. What am I doing wrong? How do I get objects to show up in this list?

I appreciate all your help and again I apologize for being so unfamiliar with this program.

because you are using the default light it’s not going to help, unless you move the default light (Display/Default Light). The default light is right where the camera is, so no matter where the camera goes the light goes. As your camera rises it sees the ‘grass’ more and more directly and the reflected light gets brighter because the grass plane (circle, whatever) is more and more lined up with the camera and light.
Simplest to just put in a real light so the angle of the light doesn’t change all the time but if you had to you could also use a material with the same color in the Color and Luminance channels.
