I am using Sony Vegas Movie Maker and the bundled software that came with my Sony Vaio Computer to burn the final copy of my work in Sony Vegas.

I have found that although the sony DVD-R that I use says that it holds a 2 hour movie I can only capture between 45 and 50 minutes of my finished work on one of them. I do not want to lose quality in the final product. Am I doing something wrong here or is it common that when you render and burn a movie that the DVD only holds about 45 min of work?

    thank so much…

those dvd’s probably mean they hold 2 hours in doing something like lp dvr recording (from a dvr player). Yes, I would expect that a 50 min project might take up the whole disc, as it is probably a 4.7 GB disc. You can get dual layer discs with about 2x more storage onthem…

This totally makes sense! By the way as I try to unravel some mysteries here would you be so kind to tell me how come a DVD of a favorite 2 hour long movie is all contained on one DVD?

What process are they using that I am not in other words…

thanks so much for all of your help!

Hollywood DVDs are replicated, not burned. They also are dual layer meaning they hold twice as much information as a single layer burned disc. You can get dual layer burnable discs as well which will hold over 8 Gig.

Thanks so much Ed. I am using a Sony Vaio computer with a Pioneer DVD burning system. It came packaged with the computer which I purchased 2 years ago.

Do I need a special DVD writing system to burn Dual layer DVD’s?

Thanks for all the great help!

Also I just remembered that I am burning DVD’s to ship to Australia and Britain. So far my standard Sony DVD-R format works great for overseas. Any idea how Dual DVD’s work in international situations?

    thanks

To burn dual layer DVDs, you have to have burnable dual layer DVDs and a dual layer burner.
