  • too many audio tracks when relinking media

Capturing HD media from a HD-CAM SR deck. Using Blackmagic Decklink card and the DVCPRO-HD codec. Captured media has 4 audio channels that contains sound. The rest of the audio channels are ignored since there’s no sound on tape for those extra 8 tracks.

If I have to relink the media at any time the newly linked file will show up with 12 audio channels and it’s very annoying to deal with since the sequence will automatically add extra audio tracks to accomodate for those audio channels.

Is there a way of turning off the extra 8 audio channels that are not being used?
I don’t want to have to delete 8 tracks of silent audio in the sequnce every time I add a new clip that has been relinked.

    Thanks,
    Erik

Why did you capture with 12 channels of audio activated? You should have turned off all the extra channels before capturing.

    Not that I know of.

I tried to turn off the extra audio channels in the Log & Capture Window but the pop-up menu for number of audio tracks is greyed out and set to 12 channels. the mystery is that when capturing we only get the amount of tracks that contain sound, but I guess it’s written into the file’s meta data that it should have 12 channels. So when relinking files when they move around between different editing machines those 8 extra empty tracks re-appear and slows the editing down.

I also looked in the Capture Preset section of the Audio/Video Settings and there’s only one option in the audio section and it’s 48k 24bit 12 channels.

If there’s a way to change that somewhere else I’d very happy to learn something new.

    Thanks,
    Erik

Something sounds very wrong there. With my Kona 3 card, I can select anywhere from 1 – 16 channels during ingest and they are never greyed out. You might want to check with BlackMagic on that one, I’d be shocked if you can’t deselect audio channels on there

Yeah, I’m taking this to the BMD forum instead since it’s not a FCP issue.
    Thanks for your quick responses.

In the clip settings tab of the log and capture window, you will see that there’s an audio section. Simply dim the tracks that you don’t need (namely tracks 5-12) and leave tracks 1-4 lit up bright green (the little round button with the speaker on it). DOn’t pay attention to the drop down menu that’s grayed out.
