  • Too many audio tracks being captured

Posted by Ron Craig on April 5, 2008 at 10:50 pm

There was a recent thread here about the way FCP captures 16 channels of audio (through either Kona or Blackmagic cards) even when the capture settings call for only two channels to be captured. It is a major time-waster to have to repeatedly delete all those additional channels during the edit session. So, two questions:

    1. Was there ever a resolution to this? It seems to be a reported (possible) bug and I haven’t seen anything here in the last month about it.

    2. Is there an efficient way to delete all the excess audio tracks on all the captured clips, other than doing it manually, one-by-one?

    Thanks.

the solution is to ensure 1 of 2 things.

1 – When you Log the clips, ensure that only the channels you want to capture are turned on. This is very easy to check in your Bins. See how many Audio channels are prepped to be captured.

2 – If you’re not sure how your capture is set up, simply launch Log and Capture, Set your Clip Settings for what you want to capture, Select “Batch” and UN-Check “Use Logged Clip Settings”. This forces FCP to capture using whatever you have set in your Log and Capture Window.

Of course, I already mentioned this in the other threads about this same issue. This is not a bug, this is operator error.

    Thanks Walter.

I find that most of the problems I have are operator error.

However, two people here reported that they did, in fact, check the boxes to limit the number of audio tracks captured. And, frankly, my recollection is that I did, too. But we still got the excess tracks.

However, before swearing an oath that I did everything properly I will print out the specifics of your instructions and make sure I follow them strictly the next time I capture.

In the meantime, am I right that there is no easy way to eliminate all but two audio tracks from a group of clips?

Automator may be able to do this but I haven’t been able to get it to work properly. So the sure fire way is to open the clips in quicktime pro, command j, select the unwanted audio tracks, select delete, save, repeat with the next clip.

If anyone has written an apple script for this that would be very nice.

I can tell you for certain I have not seen this happen on any of our AJA Kona boards, both Kona 2 and 3, if the operator has set everything correctly.

As for removing the tracks once you’ve got them, no idea on that one.
