Not sure if this would be the right forum to post in, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any tutorials for editing like a tony scott film? I have an edit project coming up for a class and would like to try it and see if i can pull it off. Thanks in adavance for any suggestions/ websites.

    Best,

Who’s Tony Scott, and what style does he do? I’m not familiar with him. Do you have a link to some of his work?

Is there a tutorial to play guitar like Neil Young? No? I didn’t think so.

Editing is an ART and to be an artist, you have to find your own “voice”. Being inspired by and emulating a style is one thing, but to ask for a “paint by numbers” tutorial says to me that you’re not being creative, you’re just being a Xerox. What I would do, is study the style, then start editing when you’re brimming with inspiration. From that will be born *your* style.

And I don’t know who Tony Scott is either.

He produced Domino, Tristan & Isolde, and the godawful (but decent looking) Man on Fire.

He’s a director, brother of Ridley Scott

You should listen to the dvd’s commentaries, you’ll learn most of what you need to know about Scott. A lot of his editing “style” is his experimenting with mixing mediums. He will use vintage cameras and undercrank them, cutting into regular or ramped film or digital footage. He’ll experiment with processing and color timing. It would be impossible to have a tutorial on his “style” because it appears that Tony is constantly experimenting, not knowing what his final product will turn out like. Good luck.

I’d like to shoot like Vittorio Storaro. Anyone got any pointers?

I’d also like to make money like Bill Gates. How do I do that?

Sorry – just couldn’t resist. I wouldn’t have pegged the COW as a joke farm but this has gotta be one of the funnier threads I’ve come across.

Watch. Listen. Learn. Make mistakes. Keep the good ‘accidents’ when they happen and know when to tell the difference.

I’m guessing as a student you’re maybe talking about the Tony Scott “look” as much as the editing.
Try Magic Bullet Suite from Red Giant Software.
It’s like a Cinematographer and a grading suite in a box.
As mentioned above, it won’t make up for directorial and editing ability though.
I can’t believe that the name of Tony Scott wasn’t instantly recognised by users of this forum.
Okay he’s made some real stinkers – “Top Gun”, “Days Of Thunder” but he’s workmanlike and did churn out “True Romance”.
That is more unforgiveable than someone starting out asking the initial question…
