    Greetings,
I am using an external DVD burner (Plextor PX-716UF) to burn a DVD using Toast.

I keep getting the following error:

    Buffer Underrun Error.
Writing was halted because data could not be sent to the recorder fast enough to maintain the current write speed.
Please try again with a slower write speed.

I have tried many different write speeds including 4XDVD, 4X, 2X, etc.
    My computer is a 1GHZ PowerPC G4. 10.3.7.

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks so much!

This happened to me once with flakey media. What brand discs are you using?

What worked for me (before going with Sony discs) was choosing “best” in the speed menu. Somehow that worked it out.

With the Sony (and Maxell, which I’ve tried also) media, though, I can choose any of the available burn speeds and everything is happy.

You are right. I changed from -R to +R media and it seems to be working now. Good grief. It’s irritiating because I specifically ASKED at the place where I bought the burner if this would be an issue….Thanks so much for the help.

    No problem, Russell.

I bet some drives are pickier about media than others, too, just to make it even more confusing. Next time you run into that error, though, try using the “best” speed in Toast.

I use an NEC combo drive (in a LaCie box) and it loves Sony media. And it’s dirt cheap where I am, in Canada, right now. I get them at Walmart for 50 cents CDN/disc. I find the Sony discs made in Taiwan are just as good quality as the ones made in Japan.

    Anyway, good luck!

    James
