After much struggling I think I have found a nifty little workaround for the playback/timeline stuttering that many of us have been getting with H.264/.mts footage in Premiere. I noticed that the places in my timeline where I was having problems were the yellow line spots so I thought, “Hey, what if I…” and I did this.

I created a new title, left it empty, dropped it on the timeline above all my footage (in a new track if needed) and I stretched it out to overlap the whole timeline. Then I hit return to render previews. To my amazement everything played back fine! The empty title, which doesn’t seem to have any effect on the video since there is nothing in it, tricks Premiere in to rendering all the footage that it may otherwise skip (giving it the yellow line above it).

This seems like a clunky way to work but it seems to work for me. Maybe others can find it useful as well.

Does this workaround illustrate an existing problem with PPro?

I am starting to wonder if editing h.264 natively is such a good idea. I am looking into other workflows.

You can usually render the yellow lines without going through all that trouble. Just go up to the Sequence menu and select Render Entire Work Area. That should do it. And I say usually, because in v5 on a high octane PC I occasionally had issues with the yellow line not rendering.

    hi,

You can always “Force a complete render” of an area by Setting the work area and pressing Shift + Enter

I’m very familiar with Premiere and the rendering capabilities. But, still, the force render and the things described in Tom’s link don’t always work for me. This workaround has been the only thing that allows me to get smooth playback. Otherwise I wouldn’t have posted it. I also think that I am not alone in my playback woes. 🙂

And yes, George, I think this situation does reveal a problem with Premiere and how it handles some footage. Maybe Adobe can integrate a solution in future updates. I just thought I would share what is working for me.

    Really?

because there is a difference between….

Enter = render what PPro thinks is necessary for RT

and Shift+enter = force render all to green bar

Alex – do you have a custom keyboard setup for that Shift+Enter? My Mac does nothing with those keystrokes. You must have the ‘Render Entire Work Area’ mapped, which isn’t standard.

    Hey everyone,

I was having the same issues. I speculated that it was an issue with the yellow, not-rendered line, but I too couldn’t get the Shift-Enter thing to work.

So I went up to the menu bar and clicked ‘Sequence’,
Then I clicked ‘Render Entire Work Area’,
and after it did that, the whole line was green and
    the footage wasn’t pixelating.

Hope this helps anyone else that comes to this thread!

((Note there are two options which look very similar.

‘Render Effects in Work Area’ and ‘Render Entire Work Area’,
make sure to click ‘Render Entire Work Area’.))
