to Mylenium: how to make the DVD menu created in After Effects work in Encore DVD
Hi, Mylenium,
I have watched your tutorial video of making DVD menu by after effects presets. It is a great DVD menu and a wonderful tutorial. It helped me a lot.
But There are still something I am not doing right to make it working in encore DVD 2.0 ( I use production studio and Have dynamic link). Here is what I did:
1, in Encore DVD, File/Import as/Menu. It wouldn’t import at all, it only import PSD and EM files.
2, in Encore DVD, File/adobe dynamic link/Import After Effects Compostion.
It did import the AE comp. But I can not make it function as a menu.3, in After effects, render the dvd menu comp to a video(avi) and import to encore DVD. It only works as a background for other still DVD menu. The button made in after effects is not working as expected.
Would you please tell me how to make the DVD menu created in After Effects to work in Encore DVD? Do you know if there is any helpful tutorial or messages exists already? I have been asking this among my friends. Many have the same problems. If this question is not answered already. It will be great appreciated if you can produce a second tutorial: how to make the DVD menu created in After Effects to work in Encore DVD.

While Justin already provided some clues, let me clarify:

That is correct. You cannot directly import AE files into Encore.

It did import the AE comp. But I can not make it function as a menu.”Yes, again your observations are right. Encore will only use the “flattened” output of AE’s Dynamic link, meaning it does not see the internal structure of the project (layers), only it’s final pixel buffer (composition).

Well, it always involves two steps:
a) Render out the background as a motion menu.
b) Use the “Save as Photoshop layers” function to save the actual menu. As explained above, Encore cannot see inside the AE project and rendering a movie will act just like using the Dynamic Link option – it makes everything “flat” (in technical terms).
Basically all that you are doing when building a menu in AE is pre-define the structure of the buttons just with the added convenience ofg having the background item with full motion as reference. In Photoshop you’d do just the same, but need to use a still as a placeholder. More down to the point: all that really matters to encore is the naming of the layers, it simply doesn’t care where and how you create your menu.
