Hi guys. Just found this sight and glad to be a part. I have made a few dvds using ulead vs9 and 10 and have also had some experience with ulead media studio. I have just obtained sony vegas7 after much research and trail. I have decided that sony was best for me.
I have been using a sony dvd cam. So all my foorage is in mpeg. I must say I still consider myself a novis although not clueless. I will be buying an hd cam in the near future and so its best to learn it now.
Ulead media studio has a feature called smart render, where the mpeg files are not reconverted, except only the area where transitions are made. I want to know if
    1. does sony vegas7 have a similar feature ?
    2. Does it make sence to convert from mpeg to avi so that I can edit, and then render again to dvd, Or should I just edit the mpeg files?
Trying to get the best quality out of my limited situation.
    thanks in advance.

Vegas can easily handle this. First, I would try importing the video via File – Import – Camcorder DVD Disc. You can edit the MPEG2 straight without going back to DV. When you render back to MPEG2, every frame will be uncompressed/recompressed, though.

I really prefer starting with DV or HDV but you’re limited by what your camera can create.
