    hello,

i am trying to edit a project for a client. the project was shot on a panasonic TM300 hd camera. unfortunately, this means the footage is AVCHD, .mts files. i have been trying like mad to convert them but can’t.

the camera connects to my mac (G5 tower) and is recognized. the manual says that i should then find the video files in 100CDPFQ folder in the DCIM folder- however the DCIM folder is empty. but i know the footage is there because it plays back on the camera. it seems that the footage is in another folder- STREAM folder.

i tried importing in iMovie (i only have version 6.0.3 which may be the problem) but it won’t recognize the camera (iMovie claims it will only recognize cameras connected via firewire but the TM300 only have USB). when i try to import- it discards all files except one thumb file, 5 seconds long, and that’s it.

FCP won’t recognize the mts files, although i heard that it should (i have version 6.06). i tried mpeg streamclip but it won’t recognize the file, same with ffmpegx.

i am at wits end- any thoughts?

    thanks

    smith

Yeah this has been an issue on many forums. I’ll cut and paste the solution:

Use Disk Utility to save your SD card (or camera hard drive if you have one) as a disk image. Then open the disk image and try Log and Transfer. FCP should see the disk image mounted on your desktop or external firewire harddrive and import the files. This works with AVCHD/.mts files. Plus, it gives you a nice small(ish) backup file of all your footage.

Thanks for your response. Does this work with non-Intel macs?

I was able to transfer the files, both directly from the camera – a TM300 – and using your advice to use the Disk Utility. I get warnings when I transfer. The image looks great in the Viewer, but awful in the Canvas when I lay it on the timeline. I’ve checked all my timeline settings for image quality.

    Any thoughts?
