I’m an English speaking editor working with foreign language material. In order to do this we create subtitles on the FCP timeline using Digital Heaven’s excellent subtitle plug-in, allowing me to understand and work with the spoken footage.

I want to use TitleExchange to create a text file from the finished edit to give to the subtitling bureau, but I’m finding it very difficult to understand the process. I suspect that the exported XML file doesn’t recognize the Digital Heaven plug-in, though TitleExchange blurb says it is supported.

Could anyone with any experience with this workflow offer any advice?

    Many thanks, Pete

I just went through the same process and it worked for me

    1. Create sequence in FCP with Digital Heaven subtitles
    2. Export XML of sequence. I selected version 4 in the popup menu.
    3. Open Title exchange and import the XML file I just created
    4. Select Track 2, the track in FCP that contained my subtitles
    5. Saved the converted file.

Make sure you don’t have any clips selected in the FCP timeline or it may export just that clip.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the quick response Roland.

Just tried what you suggested, but still struggling. Could you let me know how you’ve set up the various dialogue boxes (ie the Conversion Preferences and the Target preferences). I’m sure thats where I’m going wrong. I manage to create a STL file but it just contains info on the titles setup but no subtitle text.

    Thanks again, Pete

    Hi Peter,

With TitleExchange open the XML thru the menu Tools->FCP Generator Analysis -> Load FCP Generator XML….
The generator will show up. Then click the matching fields and save the settings to the database. Quit and relaunch TEP. From then TEP will know about your new version DH_Subtitle.
