I’m pretty new to Premiere Pro and have been viewing Lynda.com tutorials. Perhaps this subject is on one of those, but haven’t run across it. I use markers to mark the place in the video where I want the text to come in. When I go back and add the title text to the timeline, I place it where I have the markers, but when I play it back, when the timeline indicator reaches the text it doesn’t match up. In other words, the indicator will be half way through or even farther into the text block on the timeline before it shows up on the video. In all the examples I’ve viewed in the tutorials, as soon as the indicator reaches the text block, it appears on the screen. Are there some settings that I’ve missed? Is this normal? It makes it difficult to accurately place the text on the timeline when you don’t know exactly when it’s going to appear. A lot of trial and error.

    Thanks

    Hi Shelley,

Markers are not necessary – simply scrub to the position on the timeline where you want the title to come on, and drag the title from the bin to that spot on the timeline. All I can figure is that maybe you are talking about a scrolling title (like movie credits) and you have chosen the “Start off screen” option. In that case, it is trial and error – the time it takes for the text to roll up and be visible will differ depending on the length of the clip, as you can drag the title clip longer or shorter on the timeline to change duration, but anyway, drag the IN point of the title to an earlier time and just visually get it to come on when you want it to.

No, these are still titles. I don’t always use markers, only occasionally. I know they aren’t necessary. My problem seems to lie with the timing of the timeline indicator (whatever it’s called) as it scrolls across the timeline. When it comes even or meets with the text area on the timeline, I expect for the text to immediately appear on the video or for the transition to begin if one is used. I expect the text to appear or the transition begin at exactly the point where the indicator and the text area meet. In my case, the indicator is usually somewhere in the middle or toward the end of the text area on the timeline before the text/transition even appears on the video. I try to place the text area at the exact point where I want the text to pop up on the video, but with the above problem, it’s difficult to know exactly where it should be. Not a show-stopper — but very annoying.

    Thanks for the reply.

When placing your text, make sure that you zoom into the timeline and verify exactly where on the timeline that you are placing it.
