Hey, I’m a newly registered poster so if forgive me if my Creative Cow etiquette is lacking, similar posts already exist etc. I’m a BMX rider and am filming a video over the summer, between college and university. I’d like the video to have its own consistant style throughout, and I really like videos that have flickers and things in, something which I myself have begun to used based on the Film Flash tutorial which I have adapted to meet my own needs. Anyway, with that said, I’d like to put titles of each rider’s name in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen as and when a new rider is being shown, but I’m kind of stuck not just for ideas but for the know-how to implement them. I’d like the title to be quick, 1 or 2 seconds transition in, 1 or 2 out, since the action will be reasonably fast paced. I liked the flowing title tutorial a lot, something like that would be great, however I only have the standard version of After Effects 6, my computer is quite dated and cannot handle anything more recent. Anyway, I’d appreciate any thoughts, suggestions etc. without over-complication – anything I’d ever done in After Effects had been discovered by me until I found this site just recently, since then I have followed a few tutorials, but my knowledge is limited really to things I’ve tried to do myself. Any ideas on how to do the film burn look would be appreciated too, the yellowy orangy flickers and things. Anyway, I hope some of you more experienced and more creative posters can help me out, everything I’ve seen in the tutorials is amazingly good and this is fast becoming a site I read almost every day!

From what you are describing, Alistair, you may wish to use something like a jittery effect (the flowing text effect tutorial brings machines (and people!) to their knees).

Look for the Wiggler plug-in in AE and play with that. Also, if your version has Roughen Edges (I believe that 6 does) and adjust it to where your text looks very rough hewn. Add it atop the Wiggler and between the two, you end up with a very frenetic look that would work with the style and subject matter of your video. It would be hard to read but that seems all the vogue nowadays anyway. ;o)

Have fun and welcome to the Cow.

Hey, yeah I’ve tried using a jittery effect before, but I used keyframes every so often to change the position and scale etc., very long winded, so I’m interested in looking into using the wiggler, which I shall do in a minute. My version does have roughen edges, the ‘rusty’ looks pretty good, in my opinion, so thanks for that! What’re the responses usually like in threads like this one I was kind of hoping lots of people’d post? Thanks for yours!

hey Alistair; creative cow is good for asking specific questions, but more generalised questions, particularly when people are looking for ideas; can sometimes sneak under the radar. most of the people replying regularly to the forum are ae professionals, so asking for general ideas can be hard to come by! the best thing to do, is find a link with an effect you like, then ask how it was done…
