    hi,
at the moment i’m doing some grungy title-sequences for my new project.
i’ve done the background first and now i’m trying to insert the text-effects but i don’t get any good results.
    here’s what i’ve done:

    home.arcor.de/becker.fam/trailer-sequence.avi

the text bleed-in looks very static and unrealistic.
i’ve tried to play around with blending-modes, colours…but the text doesn’t fit into the background.

therefore my questions are: -do you have any tips on how to create good-looking texts on grungy backgrounds?
-how can i pay more attention on the text…for example how can i flash letters in the background.

i’m thinking about letters which are scaling-up and down and letters which are individually moving around like in a lot of title-sequences in movie trailers.

it’s a simple but difficult question: how can i create text which fits into the image….i mean you can write in black or in white but how can i create unique text.

i hope you know what i mean because it’s very hard to explain…ot only because english isn’t my native language. in my opinion there is something missing in my projects…something that would make them “special”…but i don’t know what it is….

    thanks a lot!

    Hi,

One suggestion would be to use Wiggler for the text – you can control the amount of “wiggle” as you go along…play a bit with the opacity and change the font to a grungy looking one…as for the BG – it looks good, why not duplicate a few and experiment with the blend-modes…hope this helps…

I would make a new text layer and parent it to your original animated one, then use an expression to make the text in each the same (pick whip the new text layer’s Source Text property to the original text layer’s Source Text property). Then put a wiggly selector on your new text layer and animate opacity, blur and scale. You could also add some Glow effects to this layer (and your original layer) and animate them. Then I’d make some geometric solids with an Add blend mode to intensify the flashing effect. All of this is, of course, to personal taste =)

Oh, by the way you can check out the Text animation preset named ‘Transporter’ for some similar effects that you might be able to borrow from/adapt for your own purposes!

    thanks for all the tips!
i’ve copied the background and tried around with the blending modes…and it looks great i think.
after that i tried to improve my text-layer….i know the wiggle is a little bit strong but now it doesn’t look static any more….at the end of the animation i’ve copied the text-now a second text-layer scales up and turns the screen into white…
i think it’s an improvement but it isn’t perfect.
    here’s what i’ve got: home.arcor.de/becker.fam/trailer.avi

what do you think about it?
i’ve also uploaded a version without the text-so if anybody has an idea and want to play around i would be very thankful.
i know the basics but now i am at the point where need these small details to make my projects look better….
    thanks alot

One more tip: don’t link to AVIs =) They tend to have a high data rate causing stuttering in playback on some (i.e. my) computer. I recommend MPEG-4 as a newer web standard.

Did you use fractal noise for th background? What is that text effect… I mean where it looks like a beam of light turning into words?

yes, i uses fractal noise for the background….i’ve created these stripes with a tutorial of the AE podcast but the original background is a footage of a tree…blowing in the wind….
i’ve also used some grungy textures to create dirt.
the beam of light is only made of the original text-layer with a directional blur….
i’ve set the opacity of the text layer to 0 and set the directional blur to a very high value…then i’ve animated these two settings.
finally i’ve set the blending mode to “add” which creates this light-effect.

    @wuzelwazel
    do you mean i should export a mov-file with a mpeg-4 codec?
do i need any codecs or can i export mpeg-4 with the standard after effects settings?

    @van huzendt
    thanks!
in my view a grungy font wouldn’t fit into the animation but i try to find a better font than arial 😉

in the last step i want to animate flashing letters and words like “time” in the background but at the moment i don’t know how.
can i use an expression for that?if not i will try to animate them manually…
    i’ve tried to find a striking example but i haven’t found a movie-trailer which uses this effect….
