I just burned my 16×9 movie project to DVD and played it on my roomates 4×3 TV and discovered that an unacceptable portion of the picture is cut off. Not a surprise, I know, but I did fit my titles into the inner-most rectangle in FCP’s ‘title safe’ function, but looking back now, that inner-most rectangle is far from a 4×3 ratio. My project will rarely be viewed on a 4×3 TV, so I’m not that worried, but I am wondering why my ‘title safe’ function totally let me down when it comes to 4×3 screens (rather common still!) as I would like at least the credits to be visible!! (esp. without me having to guess how centered they have to be from trial and error!)
Any one deal with a similar dilemma?

Title Safe as it is displayed in FCP’s Canvas is for the format being edited. In your case you saw 16:9 title safe. This has absolutely nothing to do with 4:3 title safe. So Title Safe didn’t let you down, this was operator error.

You need 14:9 Safe Markers to overlay into the 16:9 timeline in order to “protect” your 16:9 graphics for 4:3. Someone recently posted about some free markers that you can download and use as a filter set.

It sounds like the DVD is playing the center 4×3 portion of your 16×9 image (therby cutting off the sides) on your roommate’s TV. Was this the way you wanted it to play or did you want to see a letter-boxed 16×9 image on a 4×3 TV? If so, I’m sure there’s a control in the program that made your DVD that would allow this. In DVD Studio Pro you’d choose Letterbox instead of Pan-Scan.
