My understanding is that in 16:9 SD action safe is 3% and title safe 5% of picture (according to BBC specs) whereas 4:3 SD is 5% and 10%

Firstly this seems weird to me as the pictures are both potentially to be shown on the same monitor, so how come more room in one the the other?

Secondly if above is true the FCP title safe in 16:9 is incorrect as it seems to show 5% and 10%

Anyone else resolved this seeming anomaly?

    Thanks,

    Ken.

    hi Ken

intuitively i would go with BBC and say FCP 16:9 title safe might be a little off

i always felt 16:9 title safe was a little too safe

then again, i’m not sure whether title safe is a standardized thing.

anyway, title safe is an old, general precaution, like the yellow line in subway stations…
just view the thing on an output monitor, and a TV set. its the “safest” way 🙂

Both Digital Heaven & Andy Mees have plugins to show title safe for 16:9 and 4:3. Trust these, not FCP

If you use these you can be sure of being tech safe. It is important to note that most broadcasters still require 4:3 title safe within 16:9 programs.
