When working with either 1080 and/or 720p projects, how do you determine title safe for a SD downconversion? I know the HD will be center cut and not letterboxed. I’m laying out :5 tags for a :25-5 commercial and need to know how far to the left and right and can go before I loose title safe.

In FCP, when you have your title safe turned on you will notice two rectangles, one for title safe and the other for motion safe, you will also see short lines that poke inwards for those rectangles. Those are there to tell you what is title safe for a HD to SD downconversion for broadcast.

    Best of luck.

Thx Stephen, but I don’t have those tick marks. Is there something to turn on somewhere. Or is this a new feature in FCP 7. I’m still on 6.

The feature was added in FCP 7. You can create your own overlay in Photoshop or you do a search for a title safe overlay for FCP. I know one or two people make a plug-in that does the overlay for you. Technically it’s a 14:9 safe title you’re looking for.

Yes, it is a new feature to FCP 7. The image below was given to me by a local TV station back before FCP7. Feel free to import it into your project and line things up. Best of luck.
