I’ve been struggling to get a video to play properly on YouTube. It has a number of title rolls made with Sony Vegas Platinum-generated media: red letters with black borders that move from the bottom to the top of the screen. The playback is smooth on my computer, but on YouTube the title movement is rough or jittery…SOMETIMES. Sometimes the piece plays fine, and five minutes later it’s jumpy again; in fact, the smoothness varies unpredictably from shot to shot. Buffering the whole clip before playback doesn’t seem to matter.

I’ve tried every variation of bit rate, rendering codec, resolution, etc. (the frame rate is 29.97). None of it seems to have any effect. Finally, I downloaded the YouTube version. The problem is still there, but it’s far less pronounced than in the online playback. Am I up against some inherent limitation of the system?

You’re up against youtube. They re-encode everything. That’s just the way things are.
Vimeo and Blip are alternatives but both of those have their limitations too.
