  • Title appears from within the fog

Posted by John García on January 4, 2009 at 1:27 am

Hi, here is what I want to do:
    -Realistic fog covering all screen
-From within the fog a Title comes slowly forward until it’s completely visible.

I’m guessing I would need some kind of particle generator for the fog effect. So far I’ve tried with every particle generator included in AE7 as well as with Trapcode Particular but it doesn’t look as good as I want it to be.

As for the title coming forward I’m guessing I would need the particles to be 3d, but I’m really not sure on how to get it right.

    Any advice?

By the way, I’m afraid I won’t have any recording equipment available in a while so I can’t film steam or anything else and use it in my comp, so how would you do it only with AE?

Particular is your best bet. You’ll have to strat off with a suitable custom particle. Sounds like more tweaking needs to be done.

Ok, so Trapcode Particular did the trick for me. You were right, I just had to tweak it a bit. The fog now looks beautiful. I still don’t know how to make the title come from within the fog.

Either it’s behind every particle or in front of all of them, while what I want is for each particle to behave in a realistic 3d way so the text can be partially blocked by some of them but not by others.

Does anyone know how to solve that one?

You’ll need to use Particular’s Obscuration feature. The docs cover this aspect rather well.

What I can add to it is to have two 3D views setup, one should be your Active Camera VIew while the other set to one of the Custom views. Together, these two views allow you to see Particular in action within a 3D environment.

The active camera view shows you what you’ll get after a render and the custome view allows you to see the intreraction between the particles and the obscuration layer.

You might consider using some Fractal Noise layers placed in 3D as well. You’d be surprised at what you can accomplish with these. It doesn’t read as ‘real’ but since when was ‘real’ any fun? 😉

I’m a little embarrassed of everything in this video, except for the closing title, which uses fractal noise to accomplish what you’re attempting. If you want to spare my ego then skip to about 1:00 in, the quality also isn’t very good:

Actually, I ended using Fractal Noise. Just by playing around with CC Toner and Levels, using the Fog Lights settings as a base, looks quite nice.

It doesn’t look as good as the one you used, though. How exactly did you accomplish that effect? I’m still learning (have been usind AE only for 4 months) so I’m not sure how turning the layers 3d would do that.

And don’t be embarrassed by the video, I have done way way worse.
