  • Title and Font Issues in FCPX

    Hello,

Very new to the trade and very new to this site, so if there is a new comer section for basic editing, simply pointing me there could help!

I am having a very bad issue in FCPX, it seems when I attempt to change the font color, or font itself on any give TITLE I get a lot problems. First off, and I have seen this thread on here, sometimes when quitting and re-entering a project, i lose my fonts/spacing on the title I was using. Still have not found a solution for that.

Second, and my real problem, whenever I use a specific TITLE (for example Four Corners) and I go to change the font color using the FACE option, where you would normally see COLOR,GRADIENT,TEXTURE or – …..I am not seeing Gradient swatch….when I click Color, the – is selected for NONE…when I click texture, the COLOR option selects. When i go to change the color, the color will not match what I select. I choose red, it goes blue.

I have contacted Apple and they told me they too saw the problem, and had no solution and they escalated my issue…which I am sure means nothing. I was literally told, wait until a softaware update comes out!

So really, I am asking…..do all the editors here never change font color or styles of text in titles? Am I such a noob that I am the only one using the stock titles? Should I create EVERYTHING in Motion? Has anyone else ever seen this problem, and is there a possible work around or fix?

From what I can tell, there is some bugginess with that particular title as it translates from Motion to FCPX. Let me try to address your issues one by one.

[Rocco Richardson] ” First off, and I have seen this thread on here, sometimes when quitting and re-entering a project, i lose my fonts/spacing on the title I was using.”

Are you using the most recent version of FCPX? I haven’t seen that issue since upgrading to 10.0.1, but it’s possible that it’s still around.

[Rocco Richardson] “whenever I use a specific TITLE (for example Four Corners) and I go to change the font color using the FACE option, where you would normally see COLOR,GRADIENT,TEXTURE or – …..I am not seeing Gradient swatch….when I click Color, the – is selected for NONE…when I click texture, the COLOR option selects. Ok. this specific title has two places to change the color and they appear to conflict with one another. If you click on the Title tab of the inspector you’ll see a parameter for Title Face and Subtitle Face, and a check box for Use Face Color. Click the check box and change the color there for proper results. If you change color in the Face parameter of the Text tab, it will jack up the color for the title and you won’t be able to get reliable results.

You currently cannot color text in the Face parameter with the gradient and texture selections as you can in Motion. The interface isn’t displaying the correct parameters for those selections. That is a bug, and one they are likely working on. Hopefully, by the next update, you will be able to apply gradients to text from that control, but for now, you have two workarounds.

One, you can build a gradient effect that can be applied to white text and give you the ability to place color gradients on text (or on any video for that matter).

Two, you can open a copy of the title in Motion, do the gradient there, and save it as a template for use later.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for your response! I was able to use some of things you were mentioning. First off, that particular title is BUGGED up! When I went to do what you said about adjusting the color in the TITLE tab, it did not even have the box or the option for the first line. I had to delete it from my timeline, open a copy in motion and use the copy to get all the correct parameters! Once that was done, it worked just as you said. THANK YOU! That is something even Apple could not help with! It does suck that I can not use the gradient or texture….HOWEVER, when I brought these into motion, I was able to (at first) adjust the gradient, however, after using it for about 2 minutes, whenever I select the eye dropper the gradient scale would go great and I could not adjust anything.

How do you create the gradient effect you were mentioning to apply to text or video?

I have been trying to NOT be one of the FCPX nay sayers, but…are people actually USING these programs, it seems like they are FILLED with bugs.

I am going to start checking out your Motion tutorials, I need a lot of help with Motion. Thanks again for your help!

The 10.0.3 FCPX update seems to have fixed the gradient bug. But, I still can’t get text face textures to work.
