  • Tips for Exporting Logs from CatDV?

Posted by Kyle Heidenreich on February 18, 2015 at 4:43 pm

We have been exporting our logs as Tab Separated Text. But when opened in a Word Document, the logs come all mashed together and is difficult to read. It requires spending additional time going through the time codes and entering in a line break to create space between all of the lines of text.

Does anyone have any more efficient ways of exporting logs?

    hi Kyle

there is an export function in the log viewer that saves all the logs as text files inside a zip

please see the FAQ on the Squarebox website here

    thank you Dougal

Apologies, I didn’t clarify enough. We are having trouble exporting our Log Notes into organized documents which can be easily read and turned into a script.

you can use the copy to clipboard command and then paste straight into word or any other word processor and maintain the formatting ? does this not work for you ?

    thanks dougal

It works but this is an example of how it formats into word document:

[TIMECODE] this is a test. [TIMECODE][TIMECODE] this is a test. [TIMECODE][TIMECODE] this is a test. [TIMECODE][TIMECODE] this is a test. [TIMECODE][TIMECODE] this is a test. [TIMECODE][TIMECODE] this is a test. [TIMECODE][TIMECODE] this is a test. [TIMECODE][TIMECODE] this is a test. [TIMECODE][TIMECODE] this is a test. [TIMECODE][TIMECODE] this is a test. [TIMECODE]etc

    It’s a jumbled mess.

Within CatDV, the log notes are logged and structured with line breaks like this:

    [TIMECODE] this is a test.
    [TIMECODE] this is a test.
    [TIMECODE] this is a test.

It’s nice and easy to read and sift through. But when exported, it’s a mess. And when interviews go on for up to 40 minutes it creates a lot of wasted time manually formatting the page to be able to easily read and formulate a script out of it.

Hope that paints a better picture. Just curious if anyone else is frustrated by this.

    hi Kyle

that’s strange when i paste into word formatting is preserved – are you sure your word paste settings areent stripping the formatting as this is a option in word ?

if you can send me a sample local cdv file containing a logged clip to support@squarebox.com i can do some tests at our end to see whats happening.

Its also worth making sure you are on the latest version of catdv first as we’re constantly adding features and tweaking things so if you’re on an older version it may be that we’ve improved the handling of text since your version was released

see https://www.squarebox.com/download-links/ for the latest software

    thank you Dougal
