You should always use the smallest size images that you can and not lose quality. When particleIllusion has to scale particle images very small or very large, the image quality degrades.
If you’re using a “full color” image as the particle shape, do you really need it? Full-color shapes use much more memory than greyscale shapes. One tip: if you have a full-color shape and then check the “intense” option for that particle type, there is an internal conversion to greyscale. So if you’re not using that particle shape anywhere else, you might as well import it as greyscale.
Also, if you are using an image sequence, then there may not be anything you can do about the size: a lot of frames takes up a lot of memory.
Don’t know if this helped at all. If you can post some examples of the emitter and problems you’re having with quality, and give more info about particle shape size, etc., that would help me give a better answer.
