  • TIP: Keep your FCP Studio 2 *QT* License on 10.7+

I’d been searching all over for an answer to this, and discovered a solution myself, so I figured I’d post it:

I have FCP Studio 2 (not 3) and just upgraded my main computer to 10.8, where Studio 2 won’t install. For now I don’t use FCP enough to be troubled by this, but I constantly use QT Pro and was annoyed that I’d need to buy a new license just because Studio 2 bundles the QT Key with the installation of FCP, and I couldn’t run the installer. Bummer….

However, I found that when I copied the “Final Cut Studio System ID” file located in HD–>Library–>Application Support –>Pro Apps from my old 10.6 installation (I found it in my Time Machine backups), the Quicktime License registers properly, and I can run QT Pro on 10.8 with the FCP Studio 2 information!

Hope this saves someone some time….

    Hi Ben,
It seems that the only problem for installing FCS.2 is that the installer needs Rosetta.
but is possible install Rosetta from any old MacOS DVD (Leopard or Snow Leopard). Then installing FCS2 has no problems.

When Apple moved to OS 10.7, there were specific details on how to retain QT 7 during the install process. QT 7 works fine with Lion and Mountain Lion.

This has nothing to do with Installing FCS 2. It’s a very old software program not written for the newer operating systems.

You’re right, Steve — QT 7 is easily downloaded from Apple, where it is installed in the Utilities folder. But I am talking about registering QT Pro using the license for Studio 2. I did a clean install of Mountain Lion, thus can’t install Studio 2, and leaves me hanging with QT 7.

Raphael, thanks for the tip with Rosetta — I’ll give that a try today! I don’t use FCP much these days; operating under the assumption that in 2 or 3 years Studio 3 will only run on legacy machines…. But I loooooove how FCP combines and exports quicktime movies, especially for syncing DSLR footage with external audio. (But I do that so infrequently I’m not sure it justifies buying a copy of Studio 3.)

    Thanks for your input guys.

    Hi Ben,
I’ve got that from this recent thread:
    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1169235#1169268
It seems that at least in lion works. Not sure in ML.

Rafael: It worked! Here’s what I did:

    – Locate the old 10.6 installer.
    – Open “Optional Installs.mpkg” located in the “Optional Installs” folder of the install disc
(Incidentally, this installer runs fine, while the main FCP installer doesn’t)
    – Deselect all apps except for “Rosetta”
    – Run the installer

From there, installing FCP was a snap!

    10.8 + 10.6/Rosetta + FCP 6 = goodness

Now to find my 6.0.6 update….
