    Tiny Streams, lossy network (again)

    Hi All,
    I was successfully able to show video streaming to and from android devices using VLC on the Linux side and ipcam or vplayer on the android side. I used RTSP.

    One thing we noticed as a long lag in the video. It would be 10-12 seconds initially, but if we let the video run, it could get up into 30-40 seconds.

    We assigned that to the encode/decode time required.

    Are there cameras that will output mpeg streams directly that I can feed through VLC as a stream without reencoding? I’ve seen a few that might work, but it’s not clear to me whether they really output an mpeg container stream or if they just write files that way (and the output is analog or something).

    Ultimately, I want to get a couple Cisco video phones and be running and ip to ip chat live.

    Hey Steve-

    All of the solutions I would recommend are kinda expensive. Digital Rapids Stream hardware and software, plus Inlet’s Spinnaker, but those are more on the enterprise end. Most solutions for RT streaming (or close to it) would require a baseband source – not a file. Of course, that’s what jacks up the price tag.

    I’m sure there are more solutions out there, but these are the 2 I’ve most seen “out in the wild”.

    Hopefully someone may have a more IT solution out there than Post!
